Billund + Bergamo: a long weekend in Riga

Billund is the small airport in Jutland, yes, the LEGOLAND one. Bergamo Orio al Serio is the low-cost base of northern Italy. They share few destinations, and the most surprising is Riga: an elegant Baltic capital, affordable and still not too crowded.

Three days in Riga

• Old Town (Vecrīga): the House of the Blackheads, St Peter's Church (go up the tower) and the Three Brothers.
• Art Nouveau district: Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela, with the highest concentration of Jugendstil façades in Europe.
• Central Market: five former Zeppelin hangars full of smoked fish, black bread and street food stalls.
• Parks and canal: from the Freedom Monument along the city canal to Bastejkalns.
• Miera iela wooden quarter: cafés, craft breweries and wooden houses.
• Jūrmala: half a day on the Baltic beach, 30 minutes by train.

Tip: try Black Balsam, the local herbal liqueur, also served hot with blackcurrant. In March it's still cold: a down jacket is a must.
